Develop Precision Statement for ASTM C-78, Flexural Testing

ISSUE

ASTM C-78 has a history of being identified as the source of error in determining the strength of a concrete pavement. There are numerous examples of results of testing being disputed because of technician error, field conditions, laboratory curing, etc. The unknown factor in the test is the impact of the errors on the magnitude of the test results.

RESEARCH

Research will be accomplished that will attempt to quantitify the impact of each of the steps in the test to the magnitude of error introduced into the test results.

BENEFITS

Engineers, Owners and Contractors will have access to information that is now speculation. The research will allow for the stakeholders to evaluate at which step in the performance of C-78 are exact techniques required and which steps can be accomplished with variation in techniques without significant impact on the results.

PRODUCT

Precision Statement for ASTM C-78 in the form of a report.
